That was in Himachal...Sanjay..not in other parts of India..in other states the society has always been conservative with high importance given to virginity. Women were not allowed to step out of the house and were married off to strangers at a very young age.
Divorce was a bigger tabboo..and women were forced to live unhappy lives...coz if they dared to voice they were disowned by their own families and society....forget abt having relationships with other men...this was in most parts of india..rite from urban cities to villages..

But if there was so much freedom back then in north east and himachal..its great...wish that continued even now...

Hi Esther,
Interesting question. I think it was still a Patriarchal society and sexual mores were more flexible for men compared to women. But yes divorce was not so much of an issue. Many women of my grandmother's vintage had divorced and remarried without any problem at all. Divorce itself was not a such a big legal thing is is now today. But I can't think of one couple from my parent's generation (in our area ) who had a divorce. Obviously not because marriages suddenly became `happy' but because divorce became such a taboo.

Hi Sanjay,

I was just curious what it was really like in your grandparents time; did the same rules apply to both males and females? For example was it as acceptable for a woman to divorce her husband as it was for a man to divorce his wife? I suppose theres a little bit of a double standard now regarding that; ironic how times have changed and that too with what we now consider progress. Progress should bring liberation. And yes happiness too.
